homework.

Week 1

June 17

Watch 2-4 short newscasts or documentaries, no more than 8 minutes each. Write a 1/2 - 1 page reaction, addressing: What visual elements did you like?  What didn't you like? What about the narration - too much, too little, just right? Did you hear from who you wanted to hear from?

Think about the style  from as many aspects as you can. Tell me what you'd like to emulate - and avoid - in your own broadcast news film work in this class.

June 19

Work with your partner to come up with five ideas for your final project newscast. Write down each idea, and for each one, add two or three sentences telling me why this idea is important and interesting to you.

If you can, tell me who your audience would be, and who you would want or need to interview to do the story.

Week 2

June 24

EXTRA CREDIT: Watch another newscast or short documentary, and write up a short reaction to it like we did for homework on the first day of class. Enjoy the Frank Waln concert!

June 26

1) Write down five examples of ACTIVE vs. PASSIVE phrasing.

2) Find one short article (you can use local news - Boulder Weekly, Daily Camera, Denver Post, etc. - national, or international).

Write a broadcast script from the article, using the techniques we learned.
NOTE: It might be easier to write on lined paper than to type, in order to maintain the proper formatting! It can get tricky to keep your left and right columns aligned.

Week 3

July 1

Finish fleshing out your final project plan with your partner! Be ready to hand it in on Thursday, complete with contact information for the people you want to interview. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need help working on this.

EXTRA CREDIT:
Watch the 1987 clip about working in a newsroom.
Write a 1/2 to 1-page response to the following questions:
- What do you think has changed most in broadcast news since 1987, as this film depicts it?
- What has not changed in broadcast news?

July 3

Study for your midterm!!

Continue fleshing out your final project plan - make contacts, plan shoots, sign out cameras if you need them, etc.

Week 4

July 8

Work with your partner to plan THE REST OF YOUR INTERVIEWS!!  You'll need to have them all done soon - by Tuesday of next week!

If your interviewees are available THURSDAY, have them come meet us between 1 and 4 pm so you can interview them during class time!  Let me know if you need help scheduling.

EXTRA CREDIT:

If you and your partner finish your final project plan, I'll bump up your participation grade.

July 10

If you haven't already, you MUST SCHEDULE THE REST OF YOUR INTERVIEWS!  Your final project plan document should be COMPLETE by now.

Start working on your SCRIPT, which you will hand in with your final project. Having the script laid out may help you to organize your film.  You will finalize your script once your film is done.

BONUS: Come up with ideas for a name of our news team, so everyone can have the same outcue. This isn't for extra credit - just for creativity points!

Week 5

July 15

1)  Please get all of the rest of the footage you need!!  We'll work on editing all day in classThursday.

2)  With your partner, create a very rough outline of your script. All I need to see is big ideas - you don't need to provide the details yet. Just create a draft where you lay out a very general idea of what your story narration will say.

July 17

Everybody needs to come up with FIVE questions to ask at the 9News studio, during and after our tour. These can be questions for the producer, Nicole Vap, who's giving us a tour, about what it's like to be a reporter, or anchor, or other member of production, and what happens in the studio and the news industry. Nicole will probably be able to answer most of our questions, but you may be able to ask them directly to other people we meet on the tour.

If you need to, come work in the Edit Bay to finish your films over the weekend! We'll set hours during class.

Week 6

July 22

Study for your final exam! FINISH what you need to finish for your final project - come to the edit bay to work on your films during study hours, if you need to.

July 24

Have an awesome rest of the summer!!  I'll really miss you all!  Wishing you the very best of luck this school year, and hope to see you here at CUUB 2015!!
